Our story
For decades, this building housed a bakery and a cafe.
Owned by the Epting family for generations, it was a place where bread was baked and everyday life was shared - a space characterised by work, community, and a vibrant, living culture.
Today we continue this story – but in our own unique way.
Tamil parathas, roti, kottu, and rice & curry are now prepared where bread was once baked. Traditional craftsmanship now meets new flavours, but without losing the spirit of this special place.
We are deeply grateful to the Epting family for their trust, and for all they too have created here. We aim to preserve the soul of this house – and fill it with new stories, fresh aromas, and build a thriving community.
Panam's vision is to connect past and present by creating a space that lives on – from generation to generation, plate by plate.

About Panam
Panam was born from memories, taste, and connection. Inspired by my Tamil roots and my family's Sri Lankan cuisine, my desire grew to create my own venue in Basel.
It was meant to be a place for honest food, for meeting with others, and for building a community. Simple, uncomplicated, and above all welcoming.
Panamaram – a Tamil word for connection and rootedness – became my guiding principle. And so, Panam – Roti & Soul Food was born: rooted in my own origins, open to new ideas, and shaped by the spirit of the Tamil diaspora.
Panam is more than a restaurant: It's a place with real character which carries a message from Jaffna to Basel, plate by plate.

Our restaurant is centrally located in Basel (Elsässerstrasse 136) and offers a cosy atmosphere for lunch or takeaways. We are open to everyone – whether you are alone, with friends, or come as a party.
All dishes are prepared by hand with meticulous attention to detail and with a focus on the essentials: taste, health, and origin. We pay close attention to balanced spice blends, fresh, regional ingredients, and preparation that honours our traditional roots, while also taking inspiration from modern techniques.
